Note about traffic school-
You MUST contact this Court if you would like to take a traffic school, prior to making payment on your citation! If you do not, your payment will be applied, your case closed and your conviction sent to the DMV. No exceptions.
Tonopah Justice Court has jurisdiction in matters pertaining to small claims, evictions, traffic citations, misdemeanors, and limited jurisdiction regarding civil actions and felony and gross misdemeanor matters. The Court performs many duties and functions mandated by the Nevada State Legislature and the Nevada Supreme Court. The Court also provides assistance and works closely with various criminal defendants and numerous justice agencies.
In addition, the Court issues search warrants and arrest warrants, holds arraignments and trials for misdemeanor cases and handles gross misdemeanor and felony cases from the initial arrest through the preliminary hearing stage; including bail setting and probable cause determinations. The Court is responsible for issuing, reporting and monitoring temporary protective orders for domestic violence or stalking and harassment. The Court hears civil cases with jurisdictional amounts up to $10,000.00 and small claims cases up to $7,500.00.
Rules of Conduct
It is very important that you are in court on time. You should plan to arrive 15-30 minutes before you are scheduled to appear so you have time to make a payment, update your information with the clerk or confer with your attorney. Check in with the clerk in the lobby prior to entering courtroom.
~Appropriate court attire is to be worn in the courtroom. (No tank tops, no midriff shirts, no cutoff shorts or flip-flops).
~No gum, food or drinks allowed in the courtroom.
~Cell phones and pagers must be turned off before entering the courtroom. Also, no cameras or video cameras allowed.*
~Silence in the courtroom, except as otherwise directed and/or indicated by proper authority.
~No weapons are allowed in the courtroom.
Language Assistance to Limited English Proficient (LEP) People available.
All cameras in the courtroom are considered "media". News media groups or individuals must obtain prior permission before video or still cameras are allowed in the courtroom.
A "Media Request and Order Allowing Cameras in the Courtroom" must be granted before cameras are allowed in the courtroom. Requests can be faxed to: 775-482-7349
