Mosquito Abatement             Nye County Dealing with West Nile Virus

The Nevada State Department of Agriculture has confirmed equestrian deaths related to West Nile Virus in Nye County. We also have one confirmed case of a human that has contracted the virus.

This is a reminder to citizens with horses that West Nile Virus can be fatal if contracted in the equestrian population. Horses can be vaccinated for West Nile Virus to prevent illness and death. The initial series is two shots approximately 30 days apart and then an annual booster. Consult your veterinarian for specific information.

Prevention of West Nile Virus continues to be important. West Nile Virus cannot be spread from horses to human population. Mosquitoes are the vectors for WNV and humans contact the illness from the mosquito population. It is important to remember the risk of becoming ill from one mosquito bite is low. The easiest and best way too avoid West Nile virus is to prevent mosquito bites and eliminate areas of standing water around your home. further information
